Writing a Simple Sentence

Subject + verb + complete idea.

Examples

  • The dog barks.

Key rules

  • A simple sentence has a subject and a verb and expresses one complete idea
  • The verb must agree with the subject: The dog barks
  • Add a object or description to make the idea clearer: The dog barks at the postman
  • Start with a capital letter and end with a full stop

Common mistakes

  • dog barks → The dog barks.
  • the dog barking loud → The dog barks loudly.

Use cases

  • Writing short messages to friends
  • Labelling photos or diagrams
  • Answering a quick question in an exam
💡 Tip: Read each sentence aloud: if it sounds finished, it is probably a complete sentence.
