Question Words

who, what, where, when, why, how start information questions.

Examples

  • Where do you live?
  • Why are you late?

Key rules

  • who asks about a person, what about a thing, where about place
  • when asks about time, why about reason, how about manner
  • Word order: question word + auxiliary + subject + verb
  • how can combine: how much, how many, how old

Common mistakes

  • Where you live? → Where do you live?
  • What time is it? and What is time? mean different things → Use What time is it?
